Another hip-hop track that did nothing for me. There is probably a reason for the second part of the title but I didn’t make it all the way through to the song to find out.

As some of you know I have music playing randomly via an FM transmitter so it can be picked up by a radio anywhere in the house or garden. [look here] I own quite a bit of music and tend to forget a lot of it. Sometimes I’m surprised by what I hear.

Song Name: Don’t Watch That (Knickers, Y Fronts and Jockstraps)
Band Name: Ty

Another act from an Idol programme, from Australia this time, and before anyone asks, no I haven’t been watching Idol from various countries, I’ve only noticed they have been involved in the show after I’ve heard their music.

Track Name: Black Box
Artist Name: Stan Walker

There are limits to the types of music even I will listen to and this is beyond one of them.

This week the strangest thing was:

Song Name: Say I Yi Yi
Band Name: Ying Yang Twins

X Factor and Idol have never interested me, mainly because I don’t like the circus they create, which is more about making money than listening to good music. That doesn’t stop me posting about it though, so here is the winner of the Dutch Idol show.

She has an excellent voice, and while I don’t think the songs are fantastic (except for her cover of Nerina Pallot’s Sophia, but then I love the original) those who liked Duffy et al should enjoy them.

Track Name: Smoke
Artist Name: Lisa Lois

A few years ago I loaded all my CDs on to iTunes and since then all the new ones have been ripped and then boxed away. Sadly I have quite a large music collect (although I know some people with way more of an addiction than me) and no matter how hard I try I never get around to rating the new stuff as I load it yet alone the older tracks.

iTunes

More importantly I have taken a look at the number of songs I have rated and this is where the problem really lies. Out of 13,000 songs I have rated a grand total of 3382. When expressed as a percentage it sounds a lot better (26%), but this doesn’t hide the fact that I still have to rate nearly 10,000 songs. At an album a day that’s getting on for three years.

Then again if I’d started five years ago I’d have done it by now: a good example of the, do a little bit each day idea of work. Which reminds me, I still need to write my 1,000 words for today.

The scariest song you’ve ever heard? Scott Walker’s The Drift was given to me by a friend, and he when I said what type of music is it he laughed, and said it was the most frightening album ever. He wasn’t far wrong. When listened to in dark room on a windy night in an empty house, you will, at the least, find it a bit disturbing.

Here is track nine from the album.

Song Name: The Escape
Band Name: Scott Walker

Cat Stevens, Yusuf Islam, or just plain Yusuf, regardless of what name he goes under he does have an excellent voice.

Okay, so this is never going to be John Peel or Zane Lowe, it’s just a tune (new or old) that I’ve found in the last week and taken a fancy to. Enjoy, comment, recommend.

This track was originally released earlier this year but I’d not listened to it. Since then he has started doing live gigs and so it crawled to the top of my list. Not quite back to his Mathew And Son days, but pretty good.

Track Name: Roadsinger
Artist Name: Yusuf

Drum and bass not at its best.

This week the strangest thing was:

Song Name: Body Rock
Band Name: Shimon & Andy C

Toby Keith is still being very country and very tongue in cheek with this song

Nothing is free, or so people tell you, and even with music give-aways this appears to be true; at least in this instance.

The Pixies have made their EP available free via download; which is excellent news. I’ve not listened to them for a very long time so upon hearing this news I rushed over to their web site to get the zip file containing the tracks.

You have to give up an email address to access the download and it was here that I spotted the line:

‘By clicking Confirm and Download, you agree to the terms of this promotion and agree to receive future email updates from Pixies.’

The first part I expected; the terms probably mean about as much as the average end user licence agreement. The bit about getting more emails from the band was less good.

Having thought about this for a few days I’m still in two minds as to how good it is. First off I don’t like being forced into signing up for something. If I enjoy the band and want to hear their news I’ll let them know. I could even follow them on Twitter or add their blog to my reading list (I do this for some artists). Certainly if they had suggested I give them my mobile phone number I’d have walked away very quickly. Email matters less. I use plenty of filters and there are numerous people and organisations who send me messages that just get automatically marked as read and deleted without me ever knowing about it.

Having said that, the unsubscribe option was in small, greyed out print, at the bottom of the email, which is a bit rude.

The other half of my mind has pointed out that I am getting a few tracks for free and the pain of being on a mailing list is a small price to pay. Also, I can hardly blame the group. They have a living to make, work to promote and this is an ideal way of doing it. It’s certainly less underhanded than a lot of promotion companies who have decided to keep sending me information after I’ve purchased theatre or gig tickets from them once or twice.

If you do want the free tracks (I’m not sure how long they are available for) you can find details here. The unsubscribe option is at the bottom of the email and will look like this:
