This one was great, you had me thinking she’d found a cat right up until the end. It was a really nice piece of misdirection
The one bit where I lost the flow as a reader was the part where she was looking for had caught her eye. It seemed take a long time to get from first seeing it to actually finding it, and IMO the pace suffered for it. There’s some nice writing in there but maybe it could be cut back from 5 (from “Moving around I looked down at the pile..” to “when it turned its head and looked up at me with those large eyes I was snapped back in to action” paragraphs to maybe 2 or 3.
Anyway, really nice, the twist worked wonderfully.
